What is Blekko? New Search Engine launched slogan is “Slash The Web”.

Blekko is a search engine based on slashtags technology that provides better search results based on a particular viewpoint or group. The site, launched to the public on November 1, 2010. Blekko’s slogan, “Slash the Web,” refers to its unique method of search refinement.

Why it is known as Blekko?
It is because of Co-founder, Mr. Rich Skrenta, used to refer to his personal computer in college by the name blekko.

The company was co-founded by Rich Skrenta in 2007. The company's goal was to be able to provide useful search results without the irrelevant links frequently provided by Google. Some peoples calling Blekko the slashtag search engine because of it. Blekko uses slashtags to help you get more accurate results. Slashtags are a way that anyone can make a “vertical” search engine around any topic. Vertical search means search in a specific area of interest, it does not include results beyond the searched topic. Each slashtag represents a collection of web sites on a particular topic. As of blekko's launch date, its 8,000 beta editors had developed 3,000 slashtags corresponding to the site's most frequent searches. Blekko currently maintains over 250 slashtags, including blogs, news, gossip, green, even chocolate. These slashtags are actually a collection of relevant topic websites. You can even create your own slashtag and make it public or private. Blekko’s aim is to identify the top 50 websites on the Internet for the top 100,000 search categories.
Given that in only 2 weeks of launching in public beta, Blekko has developed to 1 million queries a day, with 30,000 user-created slashtags, it shows that the Blekko may become a major search engine in future.
